Hay Bales

Back on Friday (8/20), I took a ride up to St. Francis and back.  Along the way, I saw a field full of hay bales and stopped to take a few pictures.

Jacked Up Bike Night - August 2010

It was cloudy, humid, and rain seemed to be imminent last Thursday night so I think that kept a lot of people away from Jacked Up Bike Night at Mad Jack's in Brooklyn Park.

Don't get me wrong - there were people there but the turnout but was roughly half the size of recent months.

I got a spot next to two other Sportsters that I liked.

Here's a shot without my bike in the pic:

Here's the other side of the Sportster on the left in the photo above.

Here's the one that was parked closest to my bike.  Check out the hardtail frame, springer front end, forward controls, foot clutch, and hand shift, among lots of other amazing details.  There's lots of awesome custom fabrication work here.

Sportster Pics - August 2010 - Full Color

It's only because I like this set of pics so much that I will break with tradition and actually post the full color versions.  Check my previous post for black-and-whites.

Sportster Pics - August 2010 - Black and White

I got some really great pictures of my Sportster in Houlton, WI at the St. Croix Hilltop Drive-In on Sunday.  There are ridges where you would be able to park your car at an angle to see the movie screen.  I was able to park on one of those ridges and get really low to take the pics.  I love the way they turned out.

Here's a set of my favorites in black-and-white.  I like them so much I'll even post color versions (yes, color) tomorrow.

Back To The Drive-In... Again

On Sunday, after the car show, I headed towards Stillwater.  I stopped at P.D. Pappy's.

Then I crossed into Wisconsin and turned left to go north.

I stopped in Houlton at the St. Croix Hilltop Drive-In (again).  I like taking pictures here.

Apparently it's now a drive-in church on Sunday mornings.

However, it was empty when I got there.  The grass was bright green, the sky was bright blue, and white clouds dotted the sky. It made for some incredible pics, which I'll post very soon.

ONE HUNDRED!

This is my hundredth post!!! When I started this blog back in March, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy doing it or keep up with it. However, it's been a ton of fun and I intend to keep it going for a long time.

To celebrate post #100, I have finally added a logo to the page. The reason I hadn't done it sooner is that I found it really difficult to draw a realistic gopher in vector line-art. The cheese was a lot easier. Anyway, I am finally happy with the logo design and already have a few variations on it ready for different applications.

With a logo will come stickers and more (check back for availability). After all, what good is a motorcycle blog without swag?

Starlite Motel

Heading south on Central Ave, on the way to the car show in Columbia Heights, I saw this motel with a great sign.  It's the Starlite Motel in Hilltop, MN.

Just for fun, here's a colorized version of the same pic.

Bobby and Steve's Autoworld Car Show - August 2010

I took a Sunday ride and my first stop was a car show.  It was held at Jeff's Bobby and Steve's Autoworld in Columbia Heights, MN.

Bobby and Steve's Autoworld is a small chain of local gas stations but they have a distinctive style that embraces nostalgia.  You have to check out the inside (sorry, no pics).

There were lots of cool cars in the parking lot and along the side streets.

There were even a few bikes ridden in by spectators.

I know this car is completely over-the-top and I would (probably) never own it, but I actually think this thing is pretty awesome.

My favorite of the day was this black Corvette Stingray.  I think it was a '64.

Great River Road - Champlin to Monticello

Inspired by my recent trip up County Road 12 to Dayton, MN, I decided to explore a little further today. I followed the Great River Road from Champlin to just past Monticello before turning around. I took Cty Rd 12 to Cty Hwy 42 to MN-101 to Cty Rd 39 to Cty Hwy 75.

The ride is nice. It's a mildly curvy through mostly farmland. The speed limits are good (50-55 mph) but drop significantly (30 mph) through the towns. Most of the time you can't actually see the Mississippi River. An exception was this spot just south of Monticello.

Here's a shot looking the other way up at the sun and clouds.

On my way back, I snapped a few shots in front of these barns.

Heading back south, I made a brief stop at Dayton Bar & Grill.  Overall, it was nice little ride along a small section of a really big river.

I Know I'm A Hypocrite - I Don't Care

I have two bikes - a Sportster and a Road King.  I love them both.  My Sporty was my first and I take a lot of pride in it and love the "Sportsters Rule" shirts from Lowbrow Customs and wear them proudly in spite of their references to Big Twins.

When I saw this shirt from Quad Cam Bastards posted for sale on their site last Friday, I laughed so hard that I had to buy it immediately.  It arrived today and I can't wait to wear it in public.

Yes, I ride a Sportster.  Yes, I also ride a bagger.  Yes, I'm a hypocrite. I don't care - this shirt is AWESOME.

The Joint Bike Night - August 2010

Here's a tip...  Don't go to a bike night in a state neighboring South Dakota during the week of Sturgis.  I did and there was less than half a dozen bikes there.  I've seen more bikes at The Joint in February than tonight.  I didn't take any pictures - it was all too depressing.

Dayton, MN

After my trip through more of the Grand Rounds and a stop at Bob's on Sunday, I headed northwest out of the city.

There's a little road I like that runs from Osseo to Champlin.  You can find a map on my Roads to Ride page.  I took I-694 to County Rd 81 to get there.  The road I am talking about is Fernbrook Ln to 129th Ave N.  It ends at County Rd 12 (Dayton River Road).

Here's a pair of shots heading north on Fernbrook Ln.

I headed northwest on County Road 12.  I had not gone this way before.  It was great because the road is smooth, few stops, and has a 50 mph limit.

I got to Dayton and took this picture looking up at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.  There was a small festival going on but it was too hot & humid to walk around.

I had to head back south but I want to explore more of County Road 12.  Along the way, I snapped this picture in front of Winfield Farms.  I like riding through farmland - it makes for nice scenery.

More of the Grand Rounds

On Sunday, I decided to ride the last 3 sections of the Grand Rounds that I have not covered (Theodore Wirth Parkway, Victory Memorial Parkway, and Northeast).

I headed down MN-100 to the Glenwood Ave exit and headed east to Theordore Wirth Parkway.  First, I headed south to Cedar Lake and then turned around and headed north.

It was so freakin' humid this weekend.  You can see my lens was all fogged up trying to take this pic.  It looks like I'm riding in heavy fog.

Theordore Wirth Parkway is a slightly curvy road alongside a golf course.  It's nice but other parts of the Grand Rounds are much better.  Continuing north you run right into Victory Memorial Parkway.

Victory Memorial Parkway is very straight except for one 90 degree turn.  There a lot of greenways and the trees are nice but, again, other parts of the Grand Rounds are much better to ride.

After passing Webber Park, I was planning to cross the river to the Northeast section of the Grand Rounds but the bridge was closed so that will have to wait for another day.  I headed north and found an entrance to I-94 and headed to Bob's for some iced coffee.
